My 13-year-old son, Owen, passed away, and just a few weeks after we held his funeral, I received a phone call that changed everything.
It was his math teacher, Mrs. Dilmore.
Her voice was trembling as she said, “Ma’am… I found something that belongs to you. It’s a letter from Owen. Please come to the school as soon as you can.”
For a moment, I couldn’t even respond.
My son had died in a heartbreaking accident at the lake. My husband had taken Owen to a cottage with a group of friends, just like they did every year.
Somehow, Owen slipped into the water.
A violent storm rolled in almost immediately, and the powerful current swept him away before anyone could reach him.
Search-and-rescue teams spent days combing the lake and the nearby woods, but they never found him.
After an extensive search, the police finally told us the current had been far too strong. They believed there was no possible way he could have survived, and eventually he was declared dead.
I had no idea how to keep living after that.
The grief overwhelmed me so completely that doctors admitted me to the hospital for observation.
My husband handled every detail of the funeral because I simply couldn’t.
Even during the service, I could barely stay on my feet.
My legs felt weak, and inside I felt completely hollow.
Several weeks passed before I was able to eat even a little.
Most days, I just sat quietly in Owen’s bedroom, surrounded by his belongings, trying to hold on to what little I had left of him.
Then yesterday, Mrs. Dilmore called.
She had always been Owen’s favorite teacher, and he absolutely loved her math class.
She said softly, “Good afternoon… I’m not sure how to explain this, but today I found an envelope hidden in my desk drawer. It’s addressed to you… from Owen. Please come to the school right away.”
I grabbed my jacket without thinking and drove there immediately.
When I arrived, Mrs. Dilmore looked visibly shaken.
With trembling hands, she held out an old envelope and quietly said, “I honestly don’t know how this got there. I only found it today in my desk drawer.”
The moment I saw the familiar handwriting, tears filled my eyes.
Across the front of the envelope were two simple words:
For Mom.
My hands shook so badly that I struggled to open it.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Owen.
As I read the very first lines, my heart nearly stopped.
“Mom, if you’re reading this, it means something happened to me. There’s something you deserve to know.
The truth about my father…
and everything that’s been happening over the past few years.”
