That morning began with a strange smell.
An expensive perfume.
A scent that definitely wasn’t meant for me.
My husband stood in front of the bedroom mirror, carefully adjusting his shirt collar as though he were preparing for an important appointment.
He had sprayed so much cologne that the entire room was filled with a strong, sweet fragrance.
Too much perfume.
Too much excitement.
And far too much effort for a man who claimed he was simply going to work.
I was in the kitchen, watching the coffee slowly drip into his mug.
In my right hand was a small bottle of laxative.
It wasn’t a sudden decision.
It was the result of months of silence and suspicion.
The phone calls that always ended the moment I entered the room.
The mysterious “urgent meetings” every Friday night.
And most of all…
the message I had discovered the night before.
“I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow. Don’t forget the scent I like.”
Signed:
Caroline.
The new secretary at his company.
An elegant name.
The kind of name that sounded like it belonged on an expensive bottle of shampoo.
I took a deep breath.
“Is that coffee for me?” he asked from the kitchen doorway.
He was tightening his belt with more enthusiasm than he had shown in years whenever I suggested we go out to watch a movie together.
I handed him the mug.
“A little surprise,” I said, smiling with a calmness I didn’t even know I was capable of.
Then I watched him drink.
One sip.
Two.
Three.
He finished the entire cup.
Without complaining even once.
Honestly, that hurt a little.
Because back when he still seemed to love me, he had never been in such a hurry to drink the coffee I made for him.
“So,” I asked, leaning against the doorway with my arms crossed, “where are you going all dressed up and smelling like that?”
“To a meeting,” he answered, picking up his car keys.
“An important meeting. Strategy… projects… cooperation… you know how it is.”
His words sounded very serious.
Very professional.
But to me, they sounded like nothing more than expensive excuses.
“Cooperation… with lace?” I muttered.
But he was already walking away.
A moment later, the front door closed.
The house became silent.
I glanced at the clock.
One minute.
Two.
Five.
Then I sat down at the kitchen table and waited.
Ten minutes passed.
Exactly ten minutes.
And then…
my little paradise began.
“DAMN IT!”
My husband’s scream came from outside near the car.
I smiled.
Then I stepped onto the porch wearing the most innocent expression I could manage.
My husband was climbing out of the car bent almost completely in half.
One hand was pressed tightly against his stomach, as if he were desperately trying to stop a bomb from exploding.
Then he ran toward the house.
“What did you put in my coffee, you crazy woman?!” he shouted. “I’m not going to make it to the bathroom!”
I placed one hand dramatically against my chest.
“Darling… are you falling in love with someone?”
He stopped for half a second.
“What?”
“They say that when someone is nervous before a date, the body sometimes reveals the truth.”
“I CAN’T HOLD IT ANY LONGER!”
He suddenly rushed toward the stairs.
“Oh, by the way,” I called out sweetly, “don’t use the upstairs bathroom.”
He froze halfway up.
“Why?!”
I smiled.
“Because I’m cleaning it.”
What happened next is something I will never forget.
A man who was always bragging about his position, his success, and how important he was…
was now desperately fighting against his own stomach.
He climbed the stairs like a defeated soldier.
The bathroom door slammed shut.
And from inside came a series of sounds…
very dramatic sounds.
I let out a long sigh.
Then I picked up my phone.
I opened the group chat with my friends.
I typed:
“Girls, are we still meeting for drinks tonight?”
Three seconds later, the replies started appearing.
“Of course!”
“We’re waiting for you!”
“Tonight, we’re celebrating your new single life!”
I stood in front of the mirror and put on my lipstick.
Then I picked up my keys.
My purse.
And whatever dignity I still had left.
Just as I was about to walk out the door, my husband shouted from the bathroom:
“WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!”
I smiled.
“To a meeting.”
I paused for a moment.
“A very… important meeting.”
Then I closed the door behind me.
But at that moment, I had no idea that…
two hours later, when I returned home…
I would discover something far more unexpected than anything that had happened that morning.
