The Test Beneath the Rags

Chapter 4: The Impending Storm

Silence hung heavy over the third-floor study, broken only by the sharp, rhythmic tick of the bronze mantel clock. Mrs. Gable marched across the rug, her heels clicking against the exposed floorboard. Flushing with panic and irritation, she demanded the photograph.

Grace handed it over, her heart hammering against her ribs. She quietly explained that her sleeve had caught the table, accidentally dislodging the floorboard, but her explanation did little to calm the head housekeeper. Mrs. Gable quickly slipped the photo into her apron pocket, warning Grace that meddling with Mr. Whitmore’s private effects would cost everyone their jobs. She reminded Grace that her standing was already fragile after feeding the vagrant at the gate.

Grace raised her head, pointing out that offering an old man a piece of fruit had nothing to do with private files. Mrs. Gable snapped back, declaring that every second spent on the property fell under Mr. Whitmore’s absolute authority. Threatening immediate termination if Grace approached the desk again, Mrs. Gable turned on her heel and slammed the heavy double doors behind her.

Left alone, Grace attempted to resume dusting, though her hands shook. She could not dismiss the haunting resemblance: the man pictured alongside Adrian Whitmore looked strikingly similar to an old photograph her mother kept in a tin at home—an uncle who had disappeared into New York’s corporate world decades earlier before the family grew distant. Trying to regain her composure, she dismissed it as a simple coincidence.

Meanwhile, at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, a black executive helicopter sat idling on the tarmac. Malcolm Reed stood near the cabin door, anxiously checking his watch as a town car pulled alongside the pad.

When the rear door opened, a man stepped out wearing cracked boots, a stained beanie, and a worn coat—his face still smudged with soot. Malcolm stared in horror, stammering to ask if his boss had been mugged.

Adrian pulled off the cap and wiped the grime from his face, revealing sharp, unyielding eyes. He explained that he had spent the last two days traveling as an anonymous outcast to observe how people treated someone with no influence.

Climbing into the helicopter as it lifted into the afternoon sky, Adrian shared his conclusions with Malcolm. He stated that his security was run by bullies, his system fostered cowardice, and his staff lived in constant fear—except for a young maid named Grace, who had risked her position to show kindness to a stranger.

A sharp, dangerous smile touched Adrian’s face as he announced his intention to conduct an audit, determined to strip away every layer of corruption within his domain.
