The Test Beneath the Rags

Chapter 6: The Judgement

Three minutes later, Victor Haines pushed through the grand oak doors, clutching his cap in sweaty hands. Stepping into the foyer, he nervously asked why he had been summoned.

Adrian stood at the base of the staircase, observing the guard with cold detachment. He quietly asked Victor to clarify the primary objective of estate security and how it was enforced. Chest puffed with misplaced pride, Victor boasted of his zero-tolerance policy, explaining that he immediately removed any suspicious or destitute individuals to preserve the estate’s standards.

Adrian stepped closer, his tone dropping to a dangerous cadence. He asked Victor about an elderly traveler who had approached the gate earlier that morning seeking food. Unaware of the trap, Victor admitted to shoving the man against a stone pillar to teach him a lesson, chuckling as he described how he handled the intruder.

Before Victor could finish, Adrian’s hand shot out with blinding speed, seizing the guard’s uniform lapel and pulling him forward. In a terrifying, echoing roar, Adrian demanded to know if Victor realized who he had assaulted.

Victor stammered in confusion, calling the man a homeless tramp.

Adrian’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper: that “tramp” owned the gate, the uniform Victor wore, and every cent of his salary. With a forceful push, Adrian sent the guard stumbling backward onto the marble floor.

Addressing the stunned, motionless room, Adrian revealed that he had spent the past two days living as an outcast outside his own gates. His objective was to observe how his staff behaved when they believed no one of importance was watching. Character, Adrian declared, was defined not by how one treated an employer, but by how one treated the powerless.

Turning to Malcolm Reed, Adrian ordered Victor’s immediate termination, revoking his security clearance and blacklisting him across all corporate affiliates. Two guards promptly hauled the weeping former security officer out through the front doors.

As silence settled over the room once more, Adrian swept his eyes across the line of employees. Every head bowed in fearful submission—except one.

Grace Miller stood steady in her gray uniform, meeting the billionaire’s gaze without a trace of fear. A subtle shift passed over Adrian’s expression; the initial reckoning was over, but the true transformation of Whitmore House had only just begun.
