Chapter 9: Unearthing the Past
Six months passed, bringing a sweeping transformation to Whitmore Global. Under Grace Miller’s operational guidance, the company shed its fear-driven management style. Retention soared, toxic leadership was systematically removed, and the firm received national recognition for ethical leadership.
Yet as summer approached, a long-buried secret resurfaced.
Working late on a rainy afternoon, Grace received an urgent call from Malcolm Reed. He asked her to come down to the ground-floor lobby immediately, explaining that an elderly man claiming to be Arthur Whitmore—Adrian’s estranged uncle who was believed to have passed away twenty-five years ago—was demanding an audience and shouting family names.
Grace froze as the name echoed in her mind, recalling the old photograph she had discovered beneath the floorboard in Connecticut. Heading straight to the executive elevators, she descended to the lobby.
Down in the marble foyer, a frail man with white hair, a frayed tweed jacket, and a battered briefcase struggled against security guards, shouting that he had built the firm alongside his brother.
Grace intervened, commanding the guards to step back. As Arthur caught his breath, his eyes met Grace’s, and the undeniable family resemblance became immediately clear.
When asked why he had come, Arthur offered a bitter laugh, accusing Adrian of erasing him from history, stealing his partnership, and leaving him in obscurity while building a financial empire.
Before Grace could respond, the private elevator chimed. Adrian Whitmore stepped out into the lobby.
Approaching slowly, the billionaire looked visibly weighed down by the past. He addressed his uncle quietly, his voice devoid of anger, bearing only exhaustion.
Arthur’s eyes flashed with decades of resentment as he declared that Adrian had ruined his life, announcing his intention to reclaim what was rightfully his.
