Chapter 5: The Master’s Return
The heavy, rhythmic thrumming of helicopter blades echoed across the estate, sending a jolt of panic through Whitmore House. An unannounced arrival by Adrian Whitmore forty-five minutes ahead of schedule threw the entire household into chaos. Mrs. Gable shouted orders, sending the staff scrambling to finalize preparations while directing Grace Miller to inspect the main foyer’s floral arrangements immediately.
Outside, the sleek black Sikorsky landed gracefully on the circular stone pad. Malcolm Reed stepped out first, followed by Adrian Whitmore. He had completely shed his disguise, appearing every bit the formidable mogul in a bespoke charcoal Italian suit, a crisp white shirt, and a midnight-blue tie. His silver-streaked hair was impeccably styled, and his commanding presence dominated the grounds.
As Adrian strode toward the main entrance, his sharp gaze scanned the staff members he passed. Standing rigidly at attention by the gatehouse, security guard Victor Haines offered a trembling salute. Sweat beaded on Victor’s forehead, haunted by the memory of shoving the homeless man away just hours prior, praying the security feeds had missed the incident. Adrian passed him in cold silence, his polished shoes echoing on the stone path.
Inside the grand foyer, the entire household stood lined up in rigid formation. Grace took her place quietly near the end of the row, her hands neatly clasped over her apron.
Adrian pushed through the heavy oak doors, cutting off Mrs. Gable’s rehearsed greeting with a quiet, sharp command. Walking down the line, he paused in front of Thomas, sternly advising him to switch from lavender floor wax to a citrus cleaner to avoid ruining the marble.
Moving further along, Adrian stopped directly in front of Grace.
Meeting his piercing stare, Grace maintained her composure as he asked for her name. When she introduced herself as Grace Miller, a subtle shift passed over his face as he recalled the cold morning at the iron gate and the simple act of human kindness she had shown him.
Without turning away, Adrian called out to the head housekeeper, commanding her to summon Victor Haines from the gatehouse immediately. When Mrs. Gable cautiously inquired if there was an issue with security, Adrian noted coldly that the security problems were severe—and he intended to address them on the spot.
